DIY magazine wall collage on canvas

MAGAZINE WALL CANVAS

Remember when you were younger and used to stick posters to your wall and you're parents would get angry because sometimes you would use duct tape and the paint would come off and leave your wall with patches... Anywhoodle this is another way to get a bit of colour on your walls without ruining the paint and to get your own unique style out there.

What you will need:

  • 3 x Blank cavas' size 10" x 14" (it doesn't really matter how many of these you have, if you use one or two..or however many. It just depends on what effect you are trying to go for. I used three)
  • Glue. I used Clag Paste but any glue would do. (The glag glue because it is so wet ripples the magazine pictures quite a bit. So if you do not wish that effect then a glue stick is probably right for you)
  • Scissors
  • Magazines to get your pictures from. (I use Rush, Bazaar and collection but again you can use whichever you like)

Step One:
Take the magazine that you have chosen and flip through the pages looking for pictures that catch your eye. I tried to look for pictures of models that stood out, so very bright pictures, intreresting pictures and black and white photos. If you find a picture you like rip the page out and create a pile of pictures that you want to use. This gives you a big variety to choose from, so then sort them into groups to make sure that each canvas has an even variety of different pictures. The groups I chose were Black and white, models with a background, models without a background and very bright pictures. Now you have a clear outline of all of your pictures that you have collected.

Step Two:
Go through your piles (groups) and pick a few photos from each that you want to use for your first canvas. Once selected start to cut the photos to the outline of the models or around the part of the picture that you want. I tended to leave a border around the models so I didn't cut any part of them off by accident, but again thats up to you.

Step Three:
The arrangement of your pictures is up to you, try to fit them together so that you dont have any white space of the canvas showing. However if you do have white space and can't seem to cover it - don't stress there is a way to cover it after everything else is stuck down. There is one of two ways to stick your pictures down, either you arrange them first and then glue them down or you do it as you go. For my first canvas I arranged them first, but then for the other two and I got impatient and stuck them as I went. The advatage with arranging them first is you get to move them around if you decide you don't like it. Once they are stuck, they're stuck. Smear the glue onto the canvas, big enough to stick the picture down that you wish. Repeat this until your canvas is covered and don't worry if you images hang out over the edge, you will fix this later.

Step Four:
This is the part to cover those odd spots or if you just want to add a little more edge or depth to your canvas. Go back through the magazine and cut out some of the paragraphs, also textures or patterns that appeal to you. Cut these up into little shapes, I did triangles and odd shaped squares but it doesn't matter which you do. Then stick these cut up pieces onto bits that you want and arrange them as you wish. I cut out a girls red dress and stuck it in strips, get creative!

Step Five:
Remember those hangy-over-the-edge-bits? Yes now is when we fix those. If you have some over the edge bits, put the glue along the edge of the canvas where these bits are and stick them down. If you are on a corner fold it over one way and stick it down too so that the edges are clean.

Step Six:
Once this is done your first canvas is finished, you can just stick to one or like I did go back and do another two. Put your finished canvas near a window or leaning against a wall in your room to dry.

Let me know if you enjoyed this!!  :)
